Local Agencies to Contact for Help

Many people do not know that they have the right to have their pain controlled. Adequate pain control is necessary for you and your loved one's quality of life. If you are not receiving adequate pain control you should:

  1. Call your doctor or nurse and report the nature and intensity of the pain.
  2. Be prepared to tell the doctor or nurse which medication(s) you are currently taking.
  3. Continue to ask for a re-evaluation and/or consultation if the pain does not improve or diminish.
  4. Educate yourself about the latest techniques and methods available; ask your doctor if s/he is familiar with and uses them.
  5. Ask your doctor for a referral to a pain specialist if your problem is not being resolved.
  6. Keep a pain journal, noting when your pain occurs, the intensity, what helps, etc.
